The journey begins with the exclusive clay material sourced from Fes City, specifically from a place called "Ben Jellik." The clay is carefully collected and left to dry for 20 days. Once dry, it is skillfully broken into smaller pieces using large hammers and left to dry for another day before being immersed in water for two days. In Fes City, this intricate process is closely tied to the sun's influence, making it a unique and special craft.
Talented craftsmen shape the clay dough into exquisite flower vases, jars, plates, and more, each piece meticulously handmade. This craft is an inherited tradition, passed down through generations, and infused with the artisans' expertise and dedication.
The handmade products are then placed in a high-temperature oven, where they are baked for 8 hours at 2000°C. The next step involves the application of natural-based colors, carefully sourced from natural resources, to bring the products to life. Paint brushes made from horses' hair are used to create intricate designs using various colors like blue, red, and black.
To achieve a stunning, glossy finish, a special coating is applied to the products. They are then returned to the oven for an additional 8 hours, baking on burned wood. This meticulous process ensures the longevity of the paint, allowing you to enjoy the mirror's beauty for years to come. You can confidently use this mirror with cold or hot water, knowing that the paint is long-lasting and durable.
Moving to the art of Zellige, the clay undergoes two rounds of baking. After the second baking, the pieces are entrusted to a skilled Nekkach, who determines the pattern based on where the Zellige will be placed. Drawing inspiration from ancient references such as Karaouiyn and the king's palaces, the Zellige pieces are arranged in a mesmerizing geometric pattern. Using a material called "La resin" or "cola sima," the pieces are left to dry before being flipped to reveal the breathtaking design. This showcases the exceptional craftsmanship of clay in the city of Fes.
