Our artisans source clay exclusively from the city of Fes, specifically from a place called "Ben Jellik." The clay is carefully prepared by drying it for 20 days before breaking it into smaller pieces. After another day of drying, it is immersed in water for two days. Skilled craftsmen meticulously clean the clay, removing unwanted rocks and impurities, ensuring the highest quality for their creations. This unique process is deeply connected to the sun and is found only in Fes.
Each piece is meticulously shaped by dedicated craftsmen who transform the clay into stunning flower vases, jars, plates, and more. These products are all lovingly handmade, showcasing the artistry that has been passed down through generations.
Once shaped, the handmade products are carefully placed in an oven and baked at 2000°C for 8 hours. The next step involves painting the products with vibrant, natural-based colors sourced from nature's own palette. Our craftsmen use brushes made from horsehair to delicately apply various colors, including shades of blue, red, and black. A protective coating is then applied, giving the products a beautiful shine. After another 8-hour baking process on burned wood, the items are ready for daily use. They can withstand both hot and cold water, and the paint is long-lasting.
Moving to the intricate art of Zellige, the clay is baked twice before being handed over to a skilled artisan known as a Nekkach. This master decides the pattern based on where the Zellige will be placed, drawing inspiration from ancient references such as Karaouiyn and the king's palaces. The Zellige pieces are carefully arranged in a geometric pattern, using a material called "La resin" or "cola sima." Once dried and flipped to the front, the breathtaking design of the Zellige is revealed, showcasing the unparalleled workmanship that embodies the clay craft in the city of Fes.
